Rylee Anderson, a five-time Big 12 Conference women's high jump champion and fifth-year student-athlete at Kansas, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing May 27 at the NCAA Division 1 West Regionals at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium in California, looking to advance to her sixth career NCAA final, including her second outdoors, June 10 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. She returned from a foot injury to win the Big 12 title May 21 at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, with a third-attempt clearance at 6 feet (1.83m). Anderson, who boasts an indoor personal-best clearance of 6-2.75 (1.90m) to rank in the top 30 in collegiate history, along with an all-time outdoor mark of 6-1.25 (1.86m), is returning to the West Regional in Sacramento for the first time since 2019. She reflects on a runner-up finish March 11 at the Division 1 Indoor Championships with a 6-2 (1.88m) third-attempt clearance in Albuquerque, N.M., and how meaningful it was to have teammate Devin Loudermilk take third in the men's high jump final with a third-attempt clearance at 7-3 (2.21m). Anderson, a four-time Colorado 4A state champion at Silver Creek High, examines how significant it has been to have been given an extra year of collegiate eligibility as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic taking away the 2020 Division 1 indoor championship meet and all of the spring outdoor season, and how valuable it has been to have the experience of additional training under veteran Kansas high jump coach Tom Hays. She also analyzes how impactful the opportunities have been to compete at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials and last year's USATF Outdoor Championships, and how Anderson will continue to train following the NCAA Division 1 outdoor championship meet in preparation to jump at the U.S. meet again in July at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Anderson explains how exciting it will be to compete June 10 under the lights at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, and shares how much she is looking forward to competing in front of family. She also speaks about how much she enjoys competing against reigning Division 1 indoor and outdoor high jump champion Lamara Distin, a Jamaican athlete representing Texas A&M, as well as Georgia's Elena Kulichenko, who represents Cyprus, in addition to fellow Americans Jenna Rogers from Nebraska and Brigham Young's Cierra Tidwell, and how important several young U.S. jumpers are to the future of the event, as they pursue making national teams along with 12-time national champion Vashti Cunningham.
